Expanding Our Knowledge and Understanding of Bermuda’s Illicit Drug Markets and Urban Street Gangs
At Expert Witness Services, we are deeply committed to completing regular Continuous Professional Development to enhance our knowledge and understanding wherever possible. That’s why have taken every opportunity to expand our knowledge of the illicit drug markets and urban street gangs whilst deployed here in Bermuda.
Our mission is to assist in addressing these issues with informed strategies and effective solutions. To this end, we have seized every opportunity to expand our knowledge through direct engagement with the dedicated professionals on the front lines.
Collaboration with Bermuda’s Drug Enforcement and Gangs Units
Our journey began with the invaluable collaboration with officers from Bermuda's drug enforcement and gangs units. These officers are the unsung heroes who navigate the complex and often dangerous landscapes of drug trafficking and gang activity. By working closely with them, we have gained profound insights into the daily realities they face and the sophisticated operations they strive to dismantle.
We have had the privilege of accompanying these officers on ride-alongs, which allowed us to witness firsthand the challenges and intricacies of their work. These experiences provided us with a deeper understanding of the local drug trade dynamics and gang interactions. Discussions during these ride-alongs have been instrumental in sharing ideas, exploring new approaches, and developing a mutual understanding of the issues at hand.
Insights from the Bermuda Coast Guard
Recognising the critical role of maritime operations in drug smuggling, we extended our efforts to collaborate with the Bermuda Coast Guard. Drug smuggling via sea routes is a significant concern, and the Coast Guard’s expertise is crucial in combating this threat. We embarked on expeditions with them, sailing the waters around Bermuda to discuss the various smuggling tactics employed by traffickers.
Through these expeditions, we have explored a wide range of smuggling methods, including the use of drug mules, concealments within tourist luggage, the intricate operations of cruise ships, and the notorious rip-on-rip-off tactics. The conversations have also delved into the complexities of concealments, coverloads and coopering, providing us with a detailed understanding of how smugglers attempt to evade detection here in Bermuda.
Building Lasting Relationships
We are immensely grateful for the time, knowledge, and expertise shared by the officers of the drugs team, the gangs unit, and the Bermuda Coast Guard. Their willingness to collaborate and share their experiences has been invaluable to our efforts. These interactions have not only expanded our knowledge but also fostered a strong foundation for ongoing relationships.
Our goal is to continue nurturing these relationships, working hand-in-hand with these dedicated professionals to develop effective strategies and solutions.
